Coop Tour Preview: Coop #1
June 19, 2012 in Tacoma Urban Coop Tour
If you are a linear thinker you’ll likely start your tour with Coop #1. This year it was difficult to decide who coop #1 would be. I like to keep them in a logical order (#1 is closest to the shop), but this year there are 2 coops within 2 blocks of the shop. I opted to start at a central coop and make my way out from there. Thus this coop became Coop #1.
When Travis told me about this house I chuckled. He described the house (it is not far from his childhood home) and as I drove up to it I laughed again. It is exactly as he described it. It looks like a castle. Not the coop, the coop looks like a chicken coop. Wait… you’re on a coop tour not a homes tour. Sorry about that.
So the chicken coop… it is right in the front garden. In fact it’s right by the sidewalk. You can’t miss it. The day I photographed the coop was not the day I did the coop inspection. I’m sure the neighbors thought I was crazy. This strange woman pulls up in front of this house, jumps out and snaps a photo with her cell phone over the fence. See… totally normal.
Back to the coop. It has undergone (or will undergo) some remodel to make room for more chickens. There is an additional chicken tractor in the parking strip and meat birds in the backyard (although you probably won’t see those). This family loves their chickens.
The Second Tacoma Urban Coop Tour is Saturday, June 23rd from 10-4. Tickets are $5 for adults, kids 16 and under are free. You can purchase your tickets and map to all of the coops at GardenSphere.
