Coop Tour Preview: Coop #10

June 20, 2012 in Tacoma Urban Coop Tour

The day I visited this coop it was raining buckets.  In fact I spent most of the time standing in the garage next to the coop and I ran outside when the rain lessened to snap a photo.

This coop gives you ideas on how to have a great coop in a small space and still have 5 birds.  The coop is built right onto the garage and the girls have a large yard to free range in.  They are so popular in the neighborhood that 2 additional neighbors have coops too.  See, chickens build community.

The tour map (you have one right?) indicates that the family has Light Brahmas, a Buff Orpington and Ameraucanas.  However, shortly after I visited it became evident that one of the ameraucana hens was actually a rooster.  The homeowner brought him back and he was one of the lucky ones.  He found a wonderful home on a farm in Eugene, Oregon.  True story.  This isn’t one of those, your dog went to live on a farm stories.  I promise.

In any case, you have to go check out this coop.  If not for the coop then for the front yard vegetable garden… because around here we love front yard vegetable gardeners.

The Second Tacoma Urban Coop Tour is Saturday, June 23rd from 10-4.  Tickets are $5 for adults, kids 16 and under are free.  You can purchase your tickets and map to all of the coops at GardenSphere.
