Coop Tour Preview: Coop #4
June 20, 2012 in Tacoma Urban Coop Tour
6 more coops to go folks. Have you purchased your tickets yet? Better yet, did you get a shirt AND a ticket? You should. All the cool kids are doing it.
Ok, onto Coop #4.
When I first visited this coop I walked into the backyard and said, “Holy hell!” Ok, I was still working so I probably didn’t use those exact words, but I’m pretty sure it was somewhere along those lines. The application for this one said 8 birds. I’m fairly certain that we counted and there were closer to 14. This isn’t the only family with a big flock on the tour, but this is the first one I’d visited.
Ginormous number of chickens aside, you have to visit this coop… seriously. The family was extremely inventive when it came to coop construction. The coop itself is made from a old garden shed. The homeowners attached the run and installed a doggie door between the two. The chickens get to free range in the grass throughout the day.
My favorite part about visiting this coop… while I was visiting the family cat came out to greet me and then went on to mingle among the chickens. So I stopped to take a photo.
The girls don’t care. Honestly, they’re bigger than the cat.
The Second Tacoma Urban Coop Tour is Saturday, June 23rd from 10-4. Tickets are $5 for adults, kids 16 and under are free. You can purchase your tickets and map to all of the coops at GardenSphere.
